Silver Lining With Dangling Modifier / 2009

I like the play on words that are in a number of my titles. “Silver Lining With A Dangling Modifier” is an example of that. A “silver lining” always the promise of better things to come. A “dangling modifier” is part of language sentence structure. For this sculpture the use of both are merged to create a different meaning. Promises made but with conditions hanging on the promise. The hanging section is on a thin cable indicating frugalness, like much in life. The use of the hanging I-beam lets me add the mobil effect I like that is influenced by Alexander Calder.

This sculpture was created by hand from cast sheets of wax and molded wax I-beams. I enjoy working directly with the wax. It is easy to make changes as I manipulate it into the form I want. I have the wax turned into bronze at Monterey Sculpture Center in the Monterey bay area. “Silver Lining” had its patina there and a few others have had patinas there also. Most of my bronzes I patina myself. “Silver Lining With Dangling Modifier” is in the collection of the late Robert Freimark, a friend and mentor of mine.
